Padraig O Tuama – poetry and spirituality

Contemplation

To reflect deeply. To consider. To ponder.

Prayer

Listening. Silence. A conversation. Simply being present.

Spirituality

Exploring beyond the known and the seen. Seeking a connection with the divine and the divine presence in all things.

Who are some good writers on prayer and spirituality?

There are many, but I learnt a lot from Eugene Peterson, Tom Wright, Esther De Waal, and David Adam.

Do I need to attend a church to explore faith?

The short answer is no, however, it is important to have others with you on the journey who can support, encourage and offer you a safe space to ask questions and share your doubts and concerns.

What is the best version of the Bible to help me in my journey?

Whilst some might say there are ‘best’ Bible translations, in truth the key is that you find a version that resonates for you in a language that feels contemporary and accessible. I grew up with the New International Version and often use the New Revised Standard Version for study, but I’ve found other paraphrases like the Message Version or J B Phillip’s translation of the New Testament a fresh and invigorating read. For a variety of options see the Bible Gateway site.

Where is a good place to start with prayer?

There are some great books on prayer. An excellent starting place is Pete Greig’s “How to Pray”. I also have found daily prayer books, like Celtic Daily Prayer by the Northumbria Community and Daily Prayer by the Corymeela Community, helpful companions.

Are there any other practices you’d recommend?

The simple act of walking and being in nature is a key way I connect with God and the world around us. It’s a way of tuning in and stepping out of the rush of life. Sometimes times of retreat, away from the normal routine can be useful, particularly as modern life rather offers down time or rest.
